Happy Daddy's Day!

Today is a special day where we all take time to honor those men who raised us. It seems that in our current culture, it's needed more than ever. The media loves so much to bash on dads. Look at tv shows, especially sitcoms, and it is obvious. Most dads are portrayed as stupid, clumsy, and generally something to be mocked. And that's when a dad even appears! Unfortunately a lot of people have bought in to the nonsense that dads are worthless and unimportant.

But the truth is, dads are important. Very important. Sons need good dads as role models, and to teach them how to grow up to be responsible men. Daughters need good dads to show them what is a proper and respectful way for men to treat women, so that they can grow up to have healthy relationships.

I have been very lucky. I have a great Daddy. Throughout my childhood, I never doubted how important we kids were to him. He taught us well, gave us some freedoms, and held us accountable for our actions. Including our mistakes. And no matter how bad some of our mistakes might have been, we always knew that he was on our side and loved us. He always wanted the best for us... and still does.

There is also another great daddy in my life. Greg, who is Daddy to my boys. Being a good daddy is very important to Greg, and he is willing to make the necessary sacrifices to put his family first. He is very involved with the boys -- playing, reading, exploring, and doing all the fun things that boys do. He is determined to always be a strong role model for his sons, and to help them grow in to responsible young men. The boys will make mistakes, but no matter what, he will love them.

Perhaps today shouldn't be called "Father's Day" at all. Perhaps it should be called "Daddy's Day". Anyone can become a father, but it takes someone truly special to be a daddy. And this world could use a lot more daddies like the ones I am lucky enough to have in my life.

Happy Daddy's Day to my own daddy and to the daddy of my sons!

I wish every male would read your blog! Too many young men today think it is macho to impregnate as many girls as possible. Fatherhood takes more than a few minutes. It takes a lifetime of love, involvement and care. Happy Father's Day every true Daddy.
