Great Birthday Idea!

We received a birthday invitation today for a friend's son's first birthday party. Yeah! They included a slip with the card, asking that the gifts be for a child age 6 to 14. All gifts are being given to a children's charity in town.

What a wonderful idea! Especially when it comes to the second child, you've already got so much stuff that rarely gets used. At these young ages, they don't have a clue about birthdays and gifts anyway. So why not use the occasion to help out kids who are not so fortunate?

On Michael's first and second birthdays, we did indicate "no gifts" on the invitations. And for our wedding (which was small, and so we sent announcements instead of invitations), we asked that people make a contribution to their charity of choice in lieu of a gift. For a couple of successful professionals in their 30's, what did we need anyway?

So as we approach Matthew's first birthday, I think we are going to have to remember this. He really doesn't need anything. We've got an overload of toys, books and clothes as it is. (It helps that my brother and sister have kids who are older than ours, and we get all their hand-me-owns!)

Happy Birthday all around!
