Made in America, or Sent Overseas?
Okay, I couldn't get through the day without commenting on the State of the Union address. Or more specifically, the Democratic Response.
In arguing against the health of the American economy, Senator Webb stated: "Our manufacturing base is being dismantled and sent overseas. Good American jobs are being sent along with them."
I'm a bit confused here. Is this an "age of globalization" as he also stated, or not?
I hear all these complaints about American jobs being sent overseas, but what about the overseas jobs that are sent to the U.S.?
I live less than 5 miles from the only BMW plant in the United States. Despite some people thinking that due to BMW being in South Carolina, it is actually an American company whose initials stand for "Bubbas Makin' Wheels", it is actually a German company. A German company that has placed a major manufacturing plant in the U.S.
Does anyone complain about it being here? No! We praise BMW for bringing jobs to the community! According to the BMW website, 4,500 people are employed at the plant, with another 16,650 jobs having been brought to the area through local suppliers.
BMW has given back to the community financially as well. Again according to their website, "counties and schools benefit from BMW's investment. Anderson, Greenville, Laurens and Spartanburg counties receive over $2.4 million dollars in annual funding while the school districts in these counties receive over $3.1 million. In addition, through Corporate Giving, BMW has donated an average of $1 million a year for the past 10 years to South Carolina organizations.
So if we expect other international companies to maintain business operations and jobs in the United States, isn't it only fair that we invest in their countries as well?
Or do we need to close down the BMW plant and send all the jobs back to Germany? And Toyota... and Honda... and more than 40 models of foreign vehicles made in the U.S.?
Do we really want to shut down our corporate borders? Only American-owned companies allowed in America! And they may only employ American citizens! And no American-owned companies allowed internationally! Keep all your production and sales within our national borders!
Imagine what that would do to our economy.
