Sick Sick Sick
This has been quite a winter. It seems we've gotten hit with every bug that's passed through the area. In talking to some of my mommy friends, they've also said it's been a particularly hard winter.
For us it started in November with a stomach bug though the house. The good news was that after the first few times, Michael learned about throwing up in the potty. That was certainly a big help!
Then the head stuff came in December. Sinus infections all around. They would go away for a little while, but the colds kept coming back. As soon as we'd all get well, one of the boys would get it again and we'd start all over. Believe it or not, the head stuff continued until just about a week ago. Matthew also had the first ear infection our family has ever seen, and it took three rounds of antibiotics to rid me of the sinus infection.
And now it's the end of February. Back to the stomach bug again. Matthew unfortunately is a little young to know about the potty, so there's been a fair deal of cleaning up going on. Including all over the gym at church on Sunday, where breakfast was set up. (This was when it first hit him, otherwise we wouldn't have been there!) Many thanks to the great men there who stepped right up to the plate to help clean up quite a mess. And thanks also to Pastor Kathryn who left her conversation with the Bishop to come try to help out with Michael. (And for calling later in the week to see how we all were doing!)
We have never had a winter with this much sickness. The only difference between this year and previous years is that now we have kids in school. In both cases, the schools have full-day options for those parents who work.
At one of the schools, the Director sent an email to all the parents reminding them to keep their kids home if there was any sign of illness. It just blows me away that there are parents who send sick kids off to spend the day with other kids. But I've seen it, so I know it happens.
I wish those parents had enough consideration for the other families to keep their sick children at home. I know that it is difficult. I know that you don't get your money back if your child misses a day. But it is just not fair to the other families who keep getting sick as a result.
As for us, we religiously follow the prescribed 24 hour rule. If there are any symptoms of illness 24 hours before they are supposed to be at school (or at an activity), we keep them home. They may be perfectly fine a few hours later. But if Michael wakes up tomorrow morning with a temperature, even if it is gone by noon, he won't be at school on Friday.
I just wish everyone could follow the same rules. The schools set the rules for a reason. It's time for everyone to pay attention.

Amen! This is one thing that drives me nuts! My entire family has never been as sick as they have since Jaykeb started Mom's morning out and is around other kids now. I follow that 24 hour rule too and it blows my mind that others don't. I have a friend from home who was terrible about this and it made me so mad that I would tell her to keep her kids home if they were sick. She finally started to get it...too bad everyone doesn't. Hope everyone at your house gets well and stays that way for a very long time.
