Camping

I couldn't pass up today's Carnival on Crazy Hip Blog Mamas. Camping. No matter how you do it, write about it.

Camping is quite a story in my family. When I was very young, our family went on a vacation through Canada. It was the early 1970's, and most people still travelled on traveller's checks or cash. My parents figured a fun way to travel with three children would be camping.

This was my first camping experience. I probably wasn't more than five years old. And I liked to sleep with the light on. Never been one much for the dark.

The first night, we set up camp and prepared to go to sleep. But I was having none of that. Apparently I kept saying, "Somebody turn the lights on!" Alas, we had no light.

I would up sleeping in the back of our big Chevy station wagon with my dad.

That was the only night on the trip we wound up camping. Mom and Dad had to spring for cheap hotels for the rest of the trip. But the last day, they were just about out of money, not having planned on paying for hotels every night.

I don't think I have camped since. Sure I was a Campfire Girl growing up. But we didn't really CAMP. We stayed in cabins, thank you!

I still don't like the idea of sleeping with the bugs, snakes, and other creepy wildlife. I still don't like the idea of not having a modern bathroom right nearby. I still don't like the idea of sleeping outside in the dark.

But now I have two boys. Chances are, I'm going to have to deal with it at some point.

For Father's Day, I bought Greg a tent. I got it all set up on my own (imagine that, with never having done it before!), and Greg and Michael were set to sleep out in the backyard. I even made sure we had a battery-powered lantern for Michael. (Because he doesn't like the dark either.) Michael made it a few hours, and then decided he didn't like all the outdoor sounds.

Just like his Mommy.

We'll try again one of these days when Greg isn't overwhelmed with his MBA program, and the weather isn't threatening thunderstorms.

Perhaps one day we will even try a KOA. I'll be sure to bring along Michael's battery-operated lantern, and park our tent not too far from the modern restroom facilities.

Until then, I think I will be camping at the Marriott.

My parents used to drag us tent camping every year for the 4th of July. I hated it! Mosquitoes, sleeping on the ground (too cheap to spring for an air mattress), being stuck in a too-small tent with my brothers, no showers, latrines, yuck!

I don't mind going semi-rustic like in a cabin, but I want an actual roof over my head, cot under my back, flush toilets, and showers!

LOL! Marriot Camping. I like that! I like the tent camping too but now that I've 'grown up', I'll choose Marriot Camping if I have the choice.
