A Capitol Fourth
Like an annual tradition, last night I watched "A Capitol Fourth" on our local PBS station. It is the broadcast from the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, DC of the National Symphony Orchestra, various "popular artists", and of course the fireworks.
Tony Danza was this year's host. I can't believe it, but he made me miss the host of years past, Barry Bostwick (aka Brad from Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as some more recent shows on the tube). I sure hope they get a better host next year. I thought Tony would be good. Perhaps he was just trying too hard.
Our neighborhood fireworks started about the same time as the ones broadcast from DC. No, we do not have an organized fireworks show in our neighborhood. But fireworks are legal here, and it seems like everyone buys them. When I went outside at 9:30 pm, they were literally going off in every direction.
That can be pretty neat (as long as the boys don't get woken up!). But when they are still going off at midnight? That's a bit much! Don't people sleep?
But on the positive side, at least where we live now, we hear the bang-bang-pop-pop and know that they are just fireworks. Back living in downtown Alexandria, VA, one never knew.
