A Great Day!

We had quite a day yesterday.....

Several of the local movie theaters offer free or reduced-price summer movies for kids. Last year when Jonah (the VeggieTales movie) was being shown, I tried to take Michael. It's one of his all-time favorite movies. But he wanted no part of going in to that big, dark, loud room. Greg tried again a couple days later with the same result.

This week, Jonah was again being shown. We decided to try again. Michael was still very concerned about it being dark and loud, but we came up with ideas to combat those concerns. Earplugs, a radio with earphones, lollipops...

And he did it! In fact both boys did it! The boys made it through their first movie at the movie theater with great success! We were so proud of them! Michael even said he would like to do it again. Specifically, he wants to see "the pig movie" (i.e., Babe) in the movie theater. Unfortunately that one is not showing.

Later after Greg got home from work, we decided we would go downtown for the evening. Grab something to eat down there. But where? There are so many great places to eat downtown, but not necessarily with kids.

I just couldn't get Soby's out of my head. It is our favorite restaurant downtown. But really not a place for kids. But they do have an outdoor eating area....

So we walked up thinking about having dinner at an outdoor table. That way the boys wouldn't be too disruptive to the other diners. As soon as we approached, a very nice waiter offered us a table. He was great. One of the best waiters we've ever had. He was especially great with the boys, which was a real plus.

So the boys have now had their first meal downtown at a "fine dining" restaurant. And they did great! They ate well. They behaved well. Michael helped order. I was so amazed at how well they did!

Afterwards we walked down to the river area to the children's fountain. It's one of those things with water shooting out of the ground, made for kids to play in. Michael had a blast! He was sopping wet by the time we left. Matthew was a little more hesitant. He thought it was fascinating, but wasn't sure about running right in to those big shots of water. Towards the end though, he went to inspect where it appeared there was no water coming out. We waited to see what would happen. And then yep, up came the water right at him! He was both startled and excited at the same time.

It was a great day!
