Selfish Extravagance

It must be a slow news day. I guess we should be thankful for that, with all the recent terrorist activities in the UK, the two-year anniversary of the 2005 London bombings, as well as everything else that is going on in the world.

So what seems to be topping the news today? The wedding of 32 year-old actress Eva Longoria and 25 year-old basketball player Tony Parker.

Oh where do I begin?

News reports suggest that they have spent more than a million dollars on their wedding. Parties in the South of France, ceremony in a historic Paris cathedral, and a reception at a French castle. Not to mention foot the guests' hotel and airfare. And the $40,000 wedding cake being made in California and flown first class to France, because the French confections are just not good enough apparently. Oh yes, and the $2 million they are getting for selling the photographs.

What in the world makes these people thing that they are so important that they should have this kind of wedding? And with this kind of expense?

Imagine what one could do with $3 million. Most of us could enjoy a rather substantial retirement. You could buy about 10 beautiful homes in the Upstate of South Carolina. You could probably save the lives of numerous people throughout the world who are sick or starving.

But hey, instead let's blow all the money on an extravagant wedding. That is nothing but selfish to me.

Let's not forget too that this is not Eva Longoria's first marriage. She was previously married from 2002 to 2004. Strange then that their wedding is taking place in a Roman Catholic church.

Of course it used to be that if a woman walked down the aisle a second time, it was done quietly and with little fanfare. There were no huge guest lists and no extravagant receptions.

It just blows me away how egocentric people can be!

Yep. It seems like way too much when you look at the dollars and think of the good that could be done with that money. Imagine the college educations and endowment fund could deliver? Imagine the vaccinations.... Imagine....
