Day Out With Thomas

Yesterday we went to the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad for Day Out With Thomas. Thomas the Tank Engine comes to down, and pulls about 5 passenger cars on a 25-minute expedition. In addition, there are all kinds of kids activities at the station.

Needless to say, the boys were in choo-choo heaven. They are both so hooked on trains right now. To see Thomas live was just thrilling for them. And the tent with all the model trains and kids trains was amazing. They played and played, and talked about it the whole way home.

In fact, Michael has already said he wants to go again... SOON. Oh, and he kept talking about how if Thomas was broken, Pop Pop's Daddy would fix him. See, Pop Pop's Daddy (my Granddaddy) worked on railroad engines in Pennsylvania as a young man (before they moved to DC). We have a wonderful framed picture in our family room of all of the workers posing with one of the engines. Right up in front is Granddaddy, wearing suit and hat, looking as dapper as ever! Michael really wants to meet Pop Pop's Daddy, the train fixer. Unfortunately Granddaddy died over 20 years ago.

Driving up and back was interesting. The depot was almost all the way to Cherokee, NC, and we had to drive through the mountains to get there. Going up, we went up Highway 276 through the Pisgah National Forest. Absolutely beautiful. Coming back, we took some road down to Cashiers, NC, east along Highway 64, and then south in to Pickens, SC. The ride back was a bit more mixed in terms of scenery. There seemed to be a few rather impoverished areas far north of Cashiers.

More than anything, I have had enough driving on curvy, windy roads to last me quite a long time. UGH!

On the way home, Michael said he wanted hushpuppies for dinner. So we stopped at Silver Bay for a bite. And Michael was happy with his hushpuppies!

In all it was a fantastic day! I would recommend Day Out With Thomas to anyone whose kids are in to trains. Just one tip -- check the times that Sir Topham Hat is available. He doesn't stay out long. We got there 10 minutes after he came out, and he was meeting the last person he would meet during that session. The next session would not be for an hour, and by then we were gone.

Here is one picture from yesterday. I'm going to try to get the rest up on our website later today. I'll update when they are ready.

Edited to add: The pictures our ready! To to our website at http://www.theleibys.com.
