Matthew Versus The Buffalo

Today we went to Hollywild Animal Park for what we hoped would be another fun morning with the animals. The boys always love that place.

We arrived and the boys immediately wanted to feed the goats. We had some time to kill before the next safari ride, so we went to look at some other animals.

One of the animals that we were looking at was Lakota, the white buffalo.

Matthew was standing at the fence watching the buffalo, and I was feeding it a little. (You can feed most of the animals at Hollywild.) Just as I turned to comment to Greg about all the buffalo slobber on my hand, the buffalo started getting in to it with Matthew.

The best way I can describe it is that the buffalo was head-butting Matthew, horns and all. Matthew was screaming. Which of course made me scream and pull him away. The buffalo backed away.

Immediately I noticed an abrasion on his neck. We took him over by the gift shop to get a closer look. He had another abrasion across his face, and a lump above his ear. I got some ice from the snack bar and put it on right away. He just kept crying and crying.

The manager came and took a report. I must say that they were very friendly and helpful. Accidents can happen, especially around animals. How it is handled can totally make the difference. In this case it was such that we have no questions about coming back to visit Hollywild again.

She suggested we take him to get checked out, especially because of the lump above his ear.

So Matthew and I spent our Labor Day afternoon at the Emergency Room at Greenville Memorial once again. The last time we were there was when he split open his chin on Memorial Day weekend.

I think we need to be careful with this boy on holidays!

The doctors said he is okay. The lump was a hematoma, but it was going down. The abrasions are abrasions. They look awful but that's about it.

Here are a couple pictures of my little trooper.

Ugh. I am so glad to hear that he is okay AND that they handled it well. These are the moments that make a Mom's heart stop. Maybe you need to keep an emergency room scrap book? With two boys............. Someday these stories will amuse them and their wives :-) Wishing you peaceful days in the meantime!!

Poor little guy. Has the bump gone down yet? My son got one of those (hematoma?) bumps one time and it took over a month to go away. I took him to the doctor a few times to have it checked out because I was concerned that it took so long to go away.

BTW, we used to live near Greenville. We lived in Hendersonville for a while.
