My Day At Work!
Yep, that's right. I went to work yesterday!
Part of the Provisional Year with Junior League is working volunteer shifts in their Nearly New Shop. The NNS is the Junior League's biggest community fundraiser, so this is where we first work in the community.
I haven't worked in retail in 20 years. Since I was in college and had a part-time job in a Hallmark store. Retail was never my thing. Besides, I could make a whole lot more money working in an office doing administrative work.
But working at the NNS yesterday was really fun! I worked for a while behind-the-scenes, processing donations, and then I was out on the sales floor. Running the cash register. Swiping credit cards. Bagging up purchases. Chatting with customers.
The range of people who shop at the NNS is really interesting. I waited on non-English-speaking customers. Junior League Sustainers ("older" League members). Those who were at the NNS for really inexpensive clothes. And those who know that you can find some really nice designer clothes at the shop too. It was a total cross-section of the community.
I especially liked chatting with a few of the male customers that came in. We talked football (and the big Appalachia State defeat of Michigan). One man even talked about how now that he's got all these really sharp looking clothes (and seriously, he picked up some NICE Ralph Lauren button-down oxfords!), all he needed was to be able to find a date.
The other volunteers and staff at the shop were really great too. It is nice to be getting to know some more of the new Junior Leaguers.
I really enjoyed working my shift yesterday. In a few weeks, I'll do another one. I'm really looking forward to it!
