Columbus Day
Okay, does anyone actually celebrate Columbus Day? I mean other than possibly sleeping in a little later, and getting through the day without mail delivery? If so, I'd love to hear how!
Back when we lived around DC, everyone knew when all of the Federal Holidays occurred. After all, with a majority of the population either working for the government (be it federal, state, or local), or working for a government contractor, Federal Holidays were always a day off. So you knew that on Columbus Day there would be no work, no school, and no mail delivery.
This morning we made a visit to the post office to mail a package. I always go and use those self-service things so that I can go any time of the day and not have to worry about a line. When you're waiting with 2 little boys, you try to avoid as many lines as possible.
Turns out there was a line at the self-service machine! Lots of people coming in and out of the post office. But the regular lobby was closed. There were two men in there cleaning the floor (construction was recently completed at this location).
A lot of the people who came in to use the regular lobby were very frustrated. "How could they close the lobby for construction on a Monday?", they would ask.
I would look at them and say, "Today is Columbus Day."
Somehow I don't think the word got out down here that it is Columbus Day. The public schools are open, the county government is open, and the libraries are open. Post office is closed though. The one little bit of Federal government in the Upstate.

Here in San Francisco, the public schools were closed. My little one's private preschool was closed. My husband went to work, but came home early as it was a ghost town at work. My older daughter had private school, though.
