The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a special screening of the upcoming theatrical release, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything". This is the second big-screen movie by Big Idea and the whole VeggieTales team.

Overall I thought the movie was great. The big "moral scene" actually brought tears to my eyes in the theater. The music was great as always. My boys will definitely love listening to the soundtrack. For those of you who grew up in the 80's like me, be sure to stick around at the end of the movie for a remake that was just awesome! And of course the movie is full of the one-liners that adults have grown to love in VeggieTales movies.

Were there any movie negatives? Well, it depends who your audience is. For me, my audience is toddlers and preschoolers. That's where my boys fall, and that is the age group I work with at church.

I found the movie to be too intense for my audience. I don't want to spoil the movie, so I will intentionally be a bit vague. The pirates meet up with some challenges along their adventure, and some of these challenges might send my 4 year old running from the theater. (Admittedly, he is not real big on theater-viewing anyway, so perhaps with others it might be different.)

However, I think that in an at-home environment, where these challenges are not up on an overwhelmingly huge screen with loud theater music, it would be fine.

I spoke with one of the Big Idea representatives after the movie. She said that the movie was targeted at about 6 years old. With that in mind, I think that the level of intensity was okay. And in a few years, my target audience would probably be fine with it as well.

Do I recommend the movie? Absolutely. The lesson is great, and not overtly Biblical. The music is fantastic. The characters are all the ones you've grown to love.

The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything opens in theaters on January 11, 2008. Don't miss it!
