Tales from the Post Office
Today I went to the post office to mail some letters. They were both in those small manila envelopes -- the ones that are the size of a half-sheet of paper.
Normally I process my mail at the self-serve machines they have. I love those things! So quick, and usually no waiting in line.
But today instead of a line in the lobby, the line was at the self-serve machine. So in to the lobby I went.
On the first envelope, they insisted on ringing it as a "package" instead of a "letter" because there was a small lump from where the papers were stapled together.
On the second envelope, they tried to ring it as a "package" again. But this time I noticed that the charge for a "letter" was there too. So I asked, "I'd like it at the letter rate."
They tried to argue that it was an exception, and maybe the envelop just barely fit as a "letter", but that they would have to charge me 14 cents extra because there was a clasp on the back of the envelope.
What?
In all the times I've used the self-service machines, I've always paid for those envelopes as "letters" and never had to pay a "clasp" surcharge.
I'm getting more and more frustrated with the postal service. It's bad enough that they keep raising the price of a stamp about, what, every six months? Our mail is now not even delivered to our house until at least 4:30 pm every day. And now the postal employees at the post office are nickel and diming us?
It's no wonder the line was at the self-service machine and not at the lobby. It seems it takes the machine to get an honest transaction!
