Strides for Autism
On April 12, 2008, Michael, Matthew, and I will be walking in the Strides For Autism… Walks Across South Carolina in Greenville, SC. Strides For Autism is an annual event that raises funds for the South Carolina Autism Society. The goals for each event are to raise $45,000 to provide for family support programs, promote awareness, and support South Carolina-based research. We will be walking this year for Michael (pictured at the left), my 4 ½ year old son who was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder last December. I created a video of Michael’s story which is featured on the “What Kind of World Do You Want” website, produced by Five For Fighting. You can see his story by visiting http://www.whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com/videos/view/id/670709.
Over 26,000 children and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) live in South Carolina and one in every 150 births now is diagnosed with autism.
I would like to ask your help to support this cause. If you would to help me, please send a check to me made payable to the South Carolina Autism Society Strides For Autism. Your donation is tax deductible, and any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated. For each contribution, I will attach a yellow (Michael’s favorite color!) ribbon streamer to our stroller so that you will be along with us for the walk.
All proceeds from Strides For Autism are used in South Carolina. For information about South Carolina Autism Society, please visit http://www.scautism.org/. Help take strides against autism one step at a time.
Please remember all of those people you know who have been affected by autism and just how important YOU are in making a difference. Thank you for your support.
Please comment or send an email for additional information or instructions for mailing checks.

Susan-
If you don't mind me asking about Michael. The preschool said something "wasn't right". What did they mean? What things were they seeing? Also, had you questioned some behaviors yourself or was this a complete shock?
Many hugs to you & your family.
Julie,
The issues had to do with peer interactions and group activities. If you'd like to leave your contact info, or email me, I'd be happy to discuss it further off-blog.
Were we completely shocked? I really don't know the answer to that. Rather I can say that for us his diagnosis has explained a lot.
hey Susan. e-mail me with an address and I'll send a check.
maybe baby bliss and i can come down in April and walk too or maybe support from the sidelines. :-)
big hugs to y'all!
