Putting the Baby Carriage Before the Horse
Today I was reading an article about Katharine McPhee (of American Idol fame) in People Magazine. It was a nice article, but then there it was. "She and her boyfriend of two years, actor Nick Cokas, 41, aren't living together but, says McPhee, "things are great."".
Why does it have to be seen as odd if an unmarried couple is not living together? Why does she have to justify the quality of their relationship because they don't live together? Why did their residency status even have to be mentioned?
It sickens me the lack of morals in Hollywood today. Sure, Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon were shacking up and making babies with their guys before it was stylish. But these days, that sounds like the norm. Does anyone in Hollywood actually put the horse before the baby carriage any more?
Take a look at the following list. Can you figure out which ones waited until they got married before making babies?
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Sean "P Diddy" Combs and Kim Porter
Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars
Gillian Anderson and Mark Griffiths
Tobey Maguire and Jen Meyer
Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams
Mark Wahlberg and Rhea Durham
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Heidi Klum and Seal
Keri Russell and Shane Deary
Brooke Burke and David Charvet
Wolfgang Puck and Gelila Assefa
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard
Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso
Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky
Victoria and David Beckham (aka Posh Spice)
Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice)
Melanie Brown (aka Scary Spice)
Emma Bunton (aka Baby Spice)
Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster
Billy Bob Thornton and Connie Angland
Erykah Badu
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Elizabeth Hurley
Anne Heche and Coleman Laffoon
Answer? None of them. Every one of the above celebrity couples was either pregnant before they got married or never married at all. It's not like there are any excuses either. These aren't older moms who are reaching the end of their childbearing years, and are trying to beat the clock. These aren't couples who had the wedding date set, the wedding planned, and had a little "oops" a few weeks early.
Yet the media plays these people up like they are some kind of role models. It's disgraceful! Thankfully there are a few people like Katharine McPhee out there who are setting the right example. (And hopefully now she won't go all Hollywood and blow it like the rest of them.)
So we will be looking elsewhere for role models for our sons. And we certainly will be teaching our sons that they are better than what society is trying to tell them is acceptable behavior.
