SCAS Teachers of the Year!

On Saturday, October 4, 2008, Stephanie Horowitz and Katie Broderick of Christ Church Episcopal Preschool were awarded Teachers of the Year by the South Carolina Autism Society.

The following nomination was submitted by me on their behalf:

My son Michael was blessed to be assigned to these two wonderful teachers this past year. We knew that Michael had speech delays, but as far as we knew, everything else was fine. Within a week of school starting, Stephanie and Katie came to us and said that something was wrong. Michael was unable to interact appropriately with his peers, had trouble following directions in groups, and did not participate in group activities. Shortly thereafter, we had Michael evaluated professionally, and he was diagnosed with Autism. Throughout the whole process, Stephanie and Katie were willing to work with us. They gave us information that must be difficult for teachers to give to any parent. They completed questionnaires for several doctors and gave an amazing level of helpful detail. They continued to work with Michael through the rest of the school year, and he thrived. Even though they were not specially trained to deal with Michael's issues, they did a fantastic job. Through their hard work and understanding, Stephanie and Katie gave us our son back... and we hadn't even known he was lost. They gave Michael so many wonderful gifts... education, understanding, support, accountability, and most of all, LOVE.
