Vacation Day 4, August 12

We spent the early part of the day just hanging out and visiting with Mom Mom & Pop Pop. Michael was doing his best to wear out Mom Mom! Every time she'd sit down, it seemed Michael was saying, "Mom Mom, come please!" How can you say no when a little boy is being so polite? They went for several walks together, and played a lot.

Greg and I also got an opportunity to duck out for a few minutes alone! Imagine that! No kids around! That rarely happens. Our big trip was going to the mall to get a wedding present! I know, such excitement. But in a way, it was pretty exciting.

I'll tell you, customer service up here does not exist compared to South Carolina. The cashiers at Macy's were more focused on their conversations with each other than they were on the customers. We had to go to Gift Wrap to get a proper box for the gift. The woman there was so incompetent! Once we figured out which box to use, we tried to get some tissue paper to help secure the gift in place. She went in the back and brought us used, dirty tissue paper! It had black spots all over it! We told her we needed new, clean tissue paper. So back she went. She came out with bubble wrap, and said, "Would you like bubble wrap?" We said no, we want new, clean tissue paper. She pushed with the bubble wrap. Finally Greg picked up the box and said, "I'll just get tissue paper somewhere else." The woman said she would get us tissue paper. She reached right under the counter in front of us and handed us about 3 sheets (half-size). Greg asked for more. She gave 1 more sheet. He asked for more. She gave 1 more sheet. Finally Greg said, "Can I please have 5 more sheets?"

Good golly! In South Carolina, that gift would have been completely packed for us by the store, and they would have acted happy to do it! Instead we got some lady who seemed to be trying to go the cheapest route all around, and acted like we were inconviencing her by making her work!

Note to self: Next time buy the gift before coming.

This afternoon, we went to John & Meghan's wedding reception. They actually got married in Tuscany, Italy a few weeks ago. This was the big party. It was a lovely affair. John is an old friend of Greg's from back in their Dallas, TX days. So they've known each other a while. We haven't seen them since we moved away last year, so it was nice to see them again, especially on such a happy occasion.

It was interesting seeing how the guys were dressed at the party. It was an informal reception -- business casual. And both John and Meghan are in technical fields, so many of the guests were also techies. Including us! (Okay, I'm a former techie!) Well, the big trend for men seems to be these silk button-down shirts that go untucked. They are straight across the bottom, unlike your standard oxford shirts. Greg said they are kind of like bowling shirts! But very European. In fact I've seen them a lot in Europe. However, I've never seen them in South Carolina. But gosh, guy after guy was wearing these things!

We had to duck out of the party a bit early. Matthew's mouth was bothering him, and Michael was ready for bed.
