Crikey!

This morning we found out that the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, was killed while diving with stingrays. In a totally freak accident, the stingray barb punctured him between two ribs and right in to his heart.

We are all sad about this. Yes, he was a bit of an over-the-top goofball, but he really worked hard towards animal conservation. And he was entertaining.

But for us, it went one step further.

Almost five years ago, we were living in Alexandria, Virginia, just 4 miles from the Pentagon. On that horrible day of September 11th, the crazed terrorists crashed a plane full of innocent victims in to the Pentagon. I was at home at the time, and Greg was at work (in downtown DC). It took 3 hours for him to get home, and for me to know he was okay. We spent the next week with fighter jets and military helicopters constantly flying overhead, both day and night.

It was a very stressful and scary time.

We tried turning to television for a little entertainment. But almost every channel was running non-stop news coverage of the terrorist attacks. Even the cable channels.

We found 2 channels that were showing regular programming that we could tolerate. The Food Network and Animal Planet. For that week, we escaped the realities around us by watching Emeril and The Crocodile Hunter.

Not only did Steve Irwin succeed in his efforts to animal conservation, he also succeeded in bring a little joy to a couple on the other side of the world during a very difficult time.

So to us, his legacy goes beyond wresting crocodiles and large snakes. He really was an goodwill ambassador to the world.

Rest In Peace.

We will miss him too. I am sad at his passing... he was a bit of a risk taker, but this was a freak accident. I feel so bad for his family. Ugh.
