I Just Don't Understand

So apparently some new video game console came out today. I've seen articles in the newspaper about people camping out for days in front of the stores so that they can be the first to shell out $600 so they can go home and sit on their butts and play a video game. And hey, they're even getting in fights in the lines over the silly things!

I don't understand.

I've never understood the appeal of video games to begin with. Isn't there something better to be doing? Enjoying the outdoors? Visiting cultural sites? Reading? Playing board games? Reading? Anything?!?! But people prefer to sit in front of their console, hooked up to the television, and battle the bad-guys for hours on end. Hmmm....

I also don't understand why the video games have to be so violent. I remember the days of Pac Man. Maybe it didn't have all the realistic graphics that today's games have, but it also didn't have people blowing off each other's heads, complete with all the associated gore. I really have to question the people who find enjoyment in playing violent games (of any kind).

And the cost. $600 for this latest version. Not to mention that it seems like the "newest and greatest thing" comes out every year, so people are constantly shelling out hundreds of dollars. Not to mention the cost of the actual games.

Where are young people finding this money? Are the parents just shelling it out? I mean, I sure don't remember parents paying that kind of money for kid's toys! Are people just putting them on credit cards and paying later? If you can't pay cash for a toy, you can't afford it! Period.

Thankfully we have none of this junk in our house. And we don't plan to. Even if I approved of the things, I'm not shelling out $600. And it will be a long time before my boys would be able to pay for one on their own, if they even wanted it. But even if they were able to afford one, there's no way we would let the violent games in to our home.

Like I said, I just don't understand.
