Children's Movies
I can't help but wonder if there were any better kids movies available when I was growing up. Or did my parents just assume that a young child was too young to go to the movies?
Our boys have not yet been to the movies. I did try to take Michael to a free showing of VeggieTales, The Jonah Movie last summer, but he wanted no part of that big, dark theater. I never even took them to any of those "reel moms" things as babies.
I find even children's movies to be incredibly violent. I'm a huge Disney fan. Always have been. But most of those movies are just way to violent for preschoolers. Michael has seen Lady & The Tramp and Dumbo at home, but that's it. The newer ones seem to be particularly violent for kids movies.
There are a few animal movies that seem okay. Babe is one of Michael's favorites. I am curious to see what the new Charlotte's Web movie will be like. But Michael probably still won't be interested in that theater, which is perfectly okay.
What I really can't understand is the movies that some parents let their kids watch. I'm talking about 5 year olds watching R rated movies. Violent ones. What's up with that?
There are reasons why movies are rated R. I don't know if these parents think that the violence won't affect their kids, or if they are just too lazy to get a babysitter. More than anything, it seems that they neglect to focus on the fact that when you become a parent, the needs of your children come first. We parents have to make a lot of sacrifices. Pulp Fiction might look really good. But it is not appropriate for children.
And so no one thinks I'm sitting here being sanctimonious, let me state that Greg and I have not been out to a movie in 3 years. We haven't had babysitters, and we're not taking our kids along to movies that are not appropriate for kids. We've watched a few grown-up movies on DVD at home, but only after the kids are in bed. I practice what I preach.
So what movies have you found that are truly appropriate for kids? Either in the theater or on DVD. We're always interested in finding something new. After all, we adults like some variety through the years that we are only watching children's films!
