Our First Babysitter!
Last night was the annual Christmas party at Greg's work. Adults only. Which meant we had to find someone to watch the boys.
Last year at this time, my mother was in town for the month awaiting the birth of Matthew. So she watched Michael while we stopped by the party. This year, she and dad had been in town, but had to leave Friday to get back for their own Christmas party on Saturday.
Outside of a couple times a friend has had one of the boys over for an hour or so during the day (which is really more of a playdate than anything), no one has ever watched the boys other than my parents. Yes, we are overly particular about who watches the boys. But Michael and Matthew are the most precious things in the world to us, and we're not going to entrust their care to just anyone.
We sought lots of recommendations. We got our best hit through the Director of Children's Ministries at church. She's had an opportunity to watch kids grow up, she knows what kinds of families they come from, and whether they are trustworthy. And so we asked "Miss Rachel" to come watch the boys last night.
We prepped the boys, letting them know that Miss Rachel was coming to play with them while Mommy and Daddy went out. Michael picked out some snowman cookies at the store to cook up and have waiting when she arrived. All day he was talking about Miss Rachel coming over.
It all went great! She and the boys immediately hit it off. There was no fussing or crying when we left. The boys were totally content. She called us once at the party, which we think was great. Matthew wasn't going to sleep, and she wanted to make sure it was okay to keep him downstairs with her and Michael where he seemed to be okay. Two thumbs up for Miss Rachel! She wasn't sure what our rule would be, and so she asked! Awesome!
We came home to find the three of them in the family room, lights off, and Polar Express on the television. Michael was curled up on a blanket on the floor, sound asleep. (He sometimes naps like that during the day.) Matthew was totally curled up with Miss Rachel, also sound asleep.
Everything was perfect.
So it seems now we have a babysitter we can call on occasionally. She said that the boys were great and to call her anytime. (YEAH BOYS!) Our first babysitting experience seems to have gone just right all the way around.
An added bonus -- babysitters are much cheaper down here! Back around DC, I remember hearing people say that babysitters got a good $10 an hour. Here? $5-7. WOW! Definitely helps make hiring a sitter a little more manageable.

Congratulations!!! We had our first non-family member babysitter on Saturday as well. A teacher from Jessica's Gymboree class. As I was leaving Jessica said "bye bye mommy, I love you" and she was off to play with Miss Nicole. She went to bed without any problems and we had a lovely evening with no worries.
