Vacation Day 2: December 17
Today we went to Magic Kingdom! After making a few wrong turns trying to navigate the back roads on the Disney property, we finally made it to the parking area. We wanted to take the ferryboat over but it was closed due to heavy fog. So on to the monorail we went.
We spent a good deal of time in Fantasyland, a first for us! You just don't go there much without kids, and when we had Michael here before, he really wasn't old enough for any of the rides. We started off easy with the carousel, then went on It's A Small World. They've done a great job refurbishing that ride. It's always a favorite!
For lunch, we went to the Crystal Palace where they have the Pooh & Friends character meals. Oh is that place great! It's the third time we've been there. (The first was when Susan's whole family went in 2001, and the second was when we took Michael in 2004.) They've made great improvements in the food over the 5+ years. It's really great!
But the best part is how much the boys loved the characters! Michael was hugging every one of them. He was so excited! Matthew responded really well too. You could see huge grins behind his pacifier. They got to meet Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore. And they even got to be part of a Pooh & Tigger parade through the restaurant.
The lunch was a bit humorous though. When they walked us to our seats, we realized that they had seated us at the exact same table we sat at with Michael in 2004! Must be the best seat in the house!
Greg took the boys up the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse while I waited down below. (I don't like heights.) After that, Greg took Michael over to the Dumbo ride.
Matthew fell asleep in the stroller as he and I walked back up Main Street. We were headed to the Barber Shop. They have a little Barber Shop in a corner of Magic Kingdom, and one of the things they specialize in is "Baby's First Haircut". That is where Michael had his first cut in 2004, and we just had to take Matthew back for his first! It turns out that the same guy who cut Michael's hair was there today! So they've both had their hair cut by the same person! Matthew was a real champ getting his cut. And now he looks even cuter than before!
Then it was time for the big parade. Michael has been looking forward to the parades ever since we first started talking about the trip. Oh he was so excited! He was waving at the characters and clapping along with the music. He just loved that parade!
After the parade, we took a ride all the way around the park on the Disney World Railroad. That was exciting. As we pulled in to the Frontierland station, apparently the engineer overshot the station. We had to wait a couple minutes as he put the train in reverse and backed up. The announcer on the train said, "That's never happened before!" Who knows. But we can say that we rode the Disney World train backwards!
We were all hungry again by this time, so we grabbed a bite at a counter-service place, and sat out side and watched the ducks while we ate. The boys just love watching the ducks.
After eating, we decided to just stroll around the park a bit. We headed over to Mickey's Toontown Fair, and Michael got to see Mickey Mouse's house! He was especially excited about Pluto's doghouse out back (and his big bone!), and Mickey Mouse's garage.
From there, we headed over to Tomorrowland to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority ride. It's simple and relaxing. A bonus is that it rides through Space Mountain, so even though the boys are too young for a ride like that, they could still see some of the cool stuff inside!
And then it was time to head home. Matthew crashed right away at the hotel. It took Michael a while to get to sleep. He just seems so wound up by this trip. He's also been concerned about Conny. She is having a "doggy vacation" in the "doggy hotel". (She's in the kennel.) So we promised him that we would pick up a bone to take home for her.
As I was putting Michael to bed, I asked him what was the best part about the day. His response? "Pooh. And Tigger. And Piglet. And Eeyore. And Mickey Mouse. And parades!" So I think he enjoyed himself!
Time to head to sleep. Our legs are feeling all the walking. And we've got several more days of this to go!
