Vacation Day 5: December 20
Today we went to Disney-MGM Studios. We figured that we'd spend a little while there, and then probably head back over to Magic Kingdom. Not too much for kids at MGM, right? HA!
As we walked up to the base of Mickey's hat, we noticed that there were lines for character greetings! This was the first of MANY character greetings today! In total, we visited with Tigger, Jo Jo & Goliath (from Jo Jo's Circus), Leo & June (from Little Einsteins), Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Green Army Man, Snow White, Dopey, Minnie Mouse, and Pluto. The boys just eat that stuff up!
We started off heading towards the Great Movie Ride. Michael did not want to go on the ride since it was in the dark. So I took Matthew on. Matthew fell sound asleep! But it was good that Michael didn't go on the ride. I think it is too intense for little kids.
Then we went to the Backlot Tour. I had always enjoyed that on past visits. Well, it's not the same. Catastrophe Canyon is still fun, but the rest of the tour is now pretty much a promo for their Extreme Stunt Spectacular. The old neighborhoods that the tram used to go through are now gone. There really are no working studios to view. And the announcer really downplayed the props that were displayed. Definitely disappointing.
At this point, Michael needed to run around a bit, so we went to the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids playground. I had read in a guidebook that they really should call this, "Honey, I LOST The Kids". SO TRUE! The kids go up one set of steps, and who knows where they are going to come out. We got separated from Michael once, and it took a while to find him again. Thankfully there is only one exit, so as long as someone stays staked out by the exit, you know that your child is still inside.
They Playhouse Disney show was great! The morning shows on the Disney Channel are some of the only television that we let the boys watch. It was neat to be able to see their favorites "live" on stage! Michael even went up and got right up with one of the puppets!
We wound up eating lunch at the buffet at Hollywood & Vine. It is a Playhouse Disney character meal. So during lunch, we were visited by Jo Jo & Goliath and Leo & June. It was very spur of the moment that we went there, but we loved it! Again, a good variety of food, and the character greetings are always fun.
As always, we lined up for the big parade. Michael is a huge fan of parades, and he liked this one too. Especially since it had Santa Claus at the end!
We did a lot of wandering in the afternoon. We really wanted to make it through until 6 pm. That is when the light show begins. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. They have 5 million lights strung in this one area of Disney-MGM. At 6 pm, they all come on and the spectacle begins. They have music piped in, and the lights "dance" along with the music. They did that big song from Trans Siberian orchestra, and it was amazing. I've never seen lights like that! They also had snow falling! Which was weird considering the temperature has been around 80, and I was in shorts and a sleeveless shirt!
After what turned out to be a full day at Disney-MGM, we returned home and the boys crashed. All 3 of them. In fact here we are at 8:50 pm, and I'm the only one awake! So perhaps I should sign off for the night, and catch some sleep myself...
