Heartbreaking
I don't read the obituaries, but sometimes a picture catches your eye and you are drawn to read the story around it. A story that winds up being an obituary.
So many times since we moved here, the picture of a young child has caught my eye. And sadly, the accompanying story is a memorial of a life lost too young.
At least once a week, I stumble across a child's obituary. I don't know if I just never noticed similar ones in our newspaper back in DC, or if they just weren't there. Maybe it's just because it's a lot easier to stumble upon a picture in a 6-page metro section than in a 20-page metro section. But for whatever reason, there seem to be a lot of young lives lost in this area.
My heart breaks every time a new one is listed. Especially when the child was a boy, since I have two boys of my own. What misery these parents must be experiencing. Yet the obituaries are so full of spirit and faith. I am astonished that in the midst of such pain, the families can maintain that faith.
All these stories are an important reminder that sometimes lives can be lost too soon. We never know when. We think that everyone will grow to be very old, but that does not always happen. We hate to think about it, but sadly it is true.
So be sure to hug your children today and every day and tell them you love them. If your children are older, take some time today to make sure they know you love and support them. Be sure to remind them on a regular basis. And if you have been separated from your children for a long time, for whatever reason, make today the day to reconnect.
Tomorrow might be too late.
May God bless all the little children lost so young, and be with the families who are grieving.
