More Random Musings

Our big Epiphany cookie bake at church for the senior citizens that was scheduled for tomorrow was postponed due to a funeral. What a bummer. We had such a blast at the cookie bake last year. But of course a funeral takes precedence. It should. Thankfully the cookie bake is being rescheduled as the Valentine's cookie bake, so we'll still be able to join in the fun.

What's really funny is that last year, it was initially supposed to be the Advent cookie bake. But Upstate South Carolina got hit with the ice storm of the century just a couple days before that, so there was no way the cookie bake could go on. As a result, it was postponed to be the Epiphany cookie bake. That worked out so well that it was decided to keep it on Epiphany. And now it has to be postponed again! I'm guessing next year we will wind up with the Easter cookie bake! No matter, we will still be there!

I'm trying to decide what to do about my hair. First I've been growing out my bangs. I've had the darn things since probably junior high. It's time for them to go. I'll have to come up with a nice new style when the grow-out process is all done.

But the big question is about color. I've actually colored my hair on and off since high school. Not because of grey, but because I just don't think the natural color works quite right with my skin tone. I actually did not get my first grey hair until Thanksgiving Day of 2002. And I had been coloring for years before that!

Anyway, since my mother had cancer, I've been weary of coloring again. There is a higher than normal incidence of bladder cancer (and other cancers) with people who use hair dye. My mother never used hair dye in her life, but she's had both kidney and bladder cancer. The doctor said that both are likely related to chemicals. Mom's college degree was in... chemistry. Yep, back in the 1950's she was an extremely rare woman in that she knocked 'em dead in chemistry, the little smarty-pants!

So, I would be considered genetically predisposed to cancer since my mother had it. The cancers that she has had are related to chemicals. What kind of idiot would I be to use something known to increase the risk of the cancers I would already be predisposed to? (Actually, with all the chemical connections to cancer, I don't see how any sane person who has experience cancer would put the stuff on their heads!)

I would love to find something natural, chemical-free, that would add just a little reddish tint to my hair! It doesn't need to cover the grey. Hey, I am 20 days short of being 39. I don't need to look like I'm 25. Of course I got my parent's frugal gene, so it also has to be inexpensive and available to do at home!

Enough random musings for this rainy day in South Carolina.
