Random Musings
Last week, Mike Tyson was pulled over in Arizona for drunk driving. They found a slew of cocaine in his vehicle. Can you imagine the police officer who pulled him over? Considering Tyson's propensity to physically go off on people, I hope that officer approached with his weapon drawn!
Oprah Winfrey has donated something like $40 million dollars to start a school for girls in South Africa. She is being widely criticized for spending such a large amount of money internationally, rather than spending the money to help the schools locally in Chicago. Why is it that we always hear how much we need to help the poor of the world, and then when someone does it, they are criticized for not helping domestically? Why is Oprah being criticized and not Angelina Jolie, who started a foundation in Thailand?
Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging. Unedited videos of his execution are all over the internet. The guy was a scum, but what kind of person actually enjoys watching someone get hung to death? I'll pass.
To date, 3,000 members of the American military have been killed in Iraq. There is significant outrage over this "high" number. I believe every one of those Americans is a hero, and I wish that none of them had died. But I can't help but roll my eyes at the outrage. Have people forgotten history? Do people think that only 3,000 people died in each of our previous wars? WWI? WWII? Vietnam? The Civil War? Have people forgotten to look at what goes on in our own country? More than five times that many people are killed per year by drunk drivers. More than five times that many people are killed per year by homicide. And abortion? Over one-million a year and going strong. Where is the outrage on the homefront?
President Gerald R. Ford has died, and we are in the midst of memorializing another lost President. It has been fascinating to hear some of the eulogies. Today was designated a National Day of Mourning and a holiday for Federal employees. I can understanding giving Federal employees in DC the day off. Keeping people out of the city is key during a security even such as this. But the rest of the country? Are you telling me that every Federal employee in Milwaukee, Atlanta, or Dallas was at home following the memorial service on television? Or were they just enjoying another day off? Nothing against Federal employees -- my dad retired from the Federal government -- but some of these national days off are crazy.
And finally, a couple things from around our home. When we were in Florida, Matthew really enjoyed the Shamu show at Sea World. So Santa brought him a stuffed Shamu. Michael insists on calling him "Shampoo". It's really cute!
And a warning for those of you who are eating right now... Today I took the boys to the Greenville Zoo. We were watching the elephants. Ladybird lifted up her little bit of an elephant tail and did what elephants do. Then Joy walked over, and started sniffing around with her trunk. What followed was best described by Michael when he said, "Elephant ate ewwwww!!!" Yep, that's exactly what she did! There were many grossed out visitors who quickly moved on to the next exhibit!
Bon appetit!
