Baking Soda!
I wanted to share with everyone a side benefit from attending a Moms Club activity a few months ago.
The boys and I went to an outing to a local fire station. You figure with a trip like that, the highlight is that the kids get to see all the big trucks. That's about it, right?
Well, while we were there, one of the firemen mentioned that the best thing to have around for a kitchen fire is an old ketchup bottle full of baking soda. It will put the fire out in an instant, and will leave much less of a mess than a fire extinguisher.
Today I was preparing to make a quesidilla for lunch. I turned on the burner to start sauteing some spinach while I was slicing the cheese.
All the sudden I heard, "BOOM!" I looked down and realized I had turned on the wrong burner. Instead of heating up my pan, I turned on the burner upon which sat a glass pie dish with a cooked pie shell inside. It had heated up and exploded. Glass was everywhere, and the pie shell was on fire.
Of course the first thing I did was try to blow it out. HA! No luck. That didn't do a thing. So I ran for the fire extinguisher that is stored in our laundry closet in the kitchen. Of course when you've got a fire on your stove and a 3 1/2 year old screaming and crying, you tend to forget things. I couldn't find the extinguisher (which was hanging on the wall right inside the closet!).
Then I remembered the outing to the fire station. I grabbed the baking soda and dumped it on the flames until they were all out. The fireman was right. Baking soda put the fire out in an instant.
I'm glad we made it to the outing that day. Otherwise I'd probably still be searing for the fire extinguisher.
So to everyone reading this, remember to keep baking soda right near your stove. It really can save you from a big disaster.
And this may finally be what convinces us to go ahead and get rid of this stupid electric stove and get a good gas one! I've never had so many problems with a stove as I've had since we moved in to this house!
