A Beautiful Friend
Children with autism generally have trouble developing friendships similar to those of their peers. Michael has some special friends, and although their relationships are not typical, they are still friends.
One of their moms told me a story the other day...
Her daughter "C" was at Build-A-Bear with her grandma. Apparently Build-A-Bear is doing a promotion for autism awareness month. There is a little silver heart that you can put in your bear.
So when it was time for C to stuff her bear, she kissed the regular red heart that you always put in your bear, and then turned to the silver heart.
The Build-A-Bear employee asked her if she was putting in the silver heart for anyone special.
She said, "My friend Michael." Then she kissed the heart, and put it in with her own.
I just about cried when my friend told me this story. It makes me so happy to know that Michael has friends who get it, and who still love him.
