To The "Principal's Office"
Today Michael was sent to "the principal's office" for the first time. Okay, actually it was the preschool assistant director's office, but the drill is the same.
Michael spit in class.
In fact he spit on a friend.
Not just any friend, he spit on his good friend C who made the autism bear at Build-A-Bear.
So we've been having a lot of discussions this afternoon about how spitting makes other people feel. When you're dealing with a child on the autism spectrum, this can be especially difficult. We've used his "feelings cards", and given him examples.
I even had him call his friend C and leave a message to say he was sorry.
I guess with all of Michael's social issues, it's really good that he got through 89 days of school before being sent to the office. But still.
And of all people to spit on, why did it have to be his very best girlfriend?

Because he trusts her and knows she will forgive him. He is a very smart boy.
Hi,
My son once got in trouble at school (he was 13) for spitting off of our school's football bleachers. He wasn't spitting at anyone, but he and a few of his friends were trying to see who was the most "accurate", who could spit the longest, etc. For punishment he had to write an essay about why spitting is not a good idea. I saved it--it was a hoot, but I didn't tell him that. :)
Maybe spitting is a boy-thing? I can barely even stand to spit out my toothpaste. :)
Glad I stumbled by here--I enjoyed my visit.

I am agreeing with Grim Reality Girl: he feels comfortable enough with his good friend to be terrible to her. In a weird way, it shows the depth of the friendship, in my opinion.
Having said that, of course it needed to be dealt with as you & the principal did.
