Interesting Observations
Today Michael and Matthew were watching a train movie (aka Thomas movie). Suddenly Michael called out, "Mommy! Fix it! I can't understand the words! It sounds like Spanish!"
How in the world does he know what Spanish sounds like? He's probably never seen Dora. His school is not bilingual. We don't have people around us speaking Spanish. The most he's probably heard has been the few times he's watched Handy Manny on Playhouse Disney.
But somewhere he picked up what sounds like Spanish! And understands enough to identify that it is a different language, and that it has a name! Spanish!
Then this evening we were having family movie night. We borrowed 102 Dalmatians from the library, since the boys have enjoyed 101 Dalmatians. There is a scene where a bunch of dogs start watching a movie. You do not see the movie at that time. There are maybe 6 notes of a song played in the background (from the movie that the dogs put on to watch).
Michael immediately said, "They're watching Lady & The Tramp!" Why yes! They were! He named the movie after only hearing a few notes from the score!
But I must say, Michael wound up having quite a hard time with 102 Dalmatians. Not because of the idea that someone would kidnap puppies and potentially do harm to them. No, he was upset for Cruella De Vil.
Note that I said FOR Cruella De Vil.
Michael was in fact CRYING when Cruella got baked in to a cake, because he was worried she would not come out okay! He just kept crying and crying! Even when they decorated the Cruella cake with colored frosting and sprinkles!
He was worried about the fate of the bad guy!
In fact the movie has been off for over a half hour, and he is still upset. He just wants Daddy. I am amazed at how he reacted to this movie.
It is a good reminder that even with G rated movies, we really have to consider whether the boys are ready to watch it. This was obviously a little too much.
But as Greg mentioned, we know there are so many kids Michael's age who are watching PG and PG-13 movies. How are they tolerating them? In fact, we even know of a child who at 5 years old was allowed to watch The Godfather and Pulp Fiction. Can you imagine?
I definitely have a very observant and sensitive little guy. And I think he's the greatest!

How sweet is he? My kids giggle like maniacs when she gets baked into the cake, and Jacob wants to watch it over and over...especially the sprinkles...
