Myrtle Beach Day 6, Thursday July 3

Another fun morning on the beach! But first, an update on the hearse we had seen in front of our building. This morning there was a sign in the elevator about a 78 year old resident who had passed away. Special note was made of the local hospice group. I guess if you know your time is here, looking out over the ocean through a wall of glass might be a beautiful way to go.

We spent a few hours playing on the beach this morning. Matthew wandered a little closer to the ocean! In fact he was in about to his ankles! But he still didn't like when the little waves came in, and would take off running. We had a nice little tide pool which was nice for him to splash in. We were also able to see some little tiny fish swimming around!

After the beach, we went to the pool until lunchtime. Then Matthew napped, Greg read, Michael played, and I went to the outlet stores! I didn't buy anything much, but it was nice to walk and browse.

Later on, we drove down to Murrells Inlet, about 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach. Lots of the local seafood boats come in there, and as a result, there are a bunch of yummy restaurants. We ate at Nance's Creekside Restaurant. Very tasty!

While we were there, a little fly was buzzing around our table. Guess what Matthew did? He caught it! In fact he caught it between his thumb and forefinger! Just pinched and caught it! This is actually the second time he's caught a fly like that. I don't get it. Greg says we should get him some chopsticks like in Karate Kid.

We drove home as close to the shore as possible, jumping over to Ocean Drive whenever we could. It was neat to see the various different shore towns. We didn't seem to like the barrier-island type beach towns. Just too much crammed in to a little space. Surfside Beach had some beautiful homes, but still a bit too crammed in for us.

I think we also found the part of Myrtle Beach that some folks had warned us about. A few blocks definitely reminded us of the boardwalk area of Ocean City, Maryland. All the video arcades, cheesy t-shirt shops, and bars. Hopefully the boys won't ever be in to that stuff and we can get through all our family beach trips while staying away from those strips! Definitely a very crowded area!

We are actually staying up in the northern part of Myrtle Beach, but not quite to North Myrtle Beach. (Confusing enough?) We're right next to Kingston Plantation, and very close to the outlet center on Route 17. It is very quiet and peaceful here. We can get to whatever we need easily, but it's definitely a family area.

It's cute watching so many people scooting around on golf carts! Not many bike riders here... just golf carts! They are everywhere! And I have to say, if you have a place at the beach, and it's several blocks from the ocean, a golf cart is a great way to get around! You can even take them throughout the secondary roads, which will get you to the grocery store, and just about anything else you would need!

Heather really did a great job recommending this area!

So tomorrow is our last full day here. Looks like the weather will remain good so we can have one great final day.
