Always Supporting Education

We had a special surprise today. Michael got to go in to school for a little while today for the class Thanksgiving party. When we got home, I opened up his backpack and found a book. That's odd. Normally he only brings home books on library day, which is on Thursdays. And only if he returns the previous book (which he hasn't, since naturally that would occur on library day!).

I opened up the book, and there was a note inside. And a special inscription sticker on the inside of the book. Here it is:

Is that totally cool or what?

I called my mom to thank her. Apparently on the occasion of a student's birthday, a letter is sent to the grandparents about their "birthday book donation" program. You can donate a book to the school library in honor of a student's birthday. What a great idea!

And it's so neat to know that every time a child picks out the book A Frog in the Bog, they will know how much Mom Mom & Pop Pop love Michael and support his education.

But that's really no surprise to me. My parents have always been big supporters of education. Growing up, it was never "if" we went to college. Rather it was assumed that the next step after high school was college, just like the next step after elementary school was junior high. They both modeled good educational achievements, with Dad getting both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Physics, and Mom getting her Bachelors Degree in Chemistry (at a time when few women even went to college at all).

They have always been there to support me in one way or another in my education. They always expected the best from me. Throughout my Masters program, they always made sure to tell me how proud they were of how hard I was working and how well I was doing. (I didn't give them as many opportunities to give me that praise during my undergraduate years!) But then again, parents should always be their children's biggest cheerleaders.

And now they are showing that same kind of support to our boys as they are starting their educational endeavors. They are always asking about what the boys are doing in school. They are always engaged in reinforcing school activities when they come to visit. And they have supported the educational institutions every time they have been asked.

Thanks, Mom Mom & Pop Pop for continuing to stress the importance of education to your children and grandchildren. You're the best!
