Educated Voting

Tomorrow is Election Day! I've been busy all weekend researching candidates and constitutional amendments. I think I'm finally starting to figure out this South Carolina government stuff!

One candidate did make it pretty easy for me to cross him off any potential consideration this weekend. The Libertarian candidate for US House was arrested Saturday for criminal domestic violence. I'm all for the concept of "innocent until proven guilty", but this guy is going to have some more pressing commitments than serving his potential constituents in the US House!

I did notice something I did not like on the Sample Ballot in the newspaper yesterday. Apparently we are offered the opportunity "vote a straight party-line". The first selection on the Sample Ballot said, "Vote Straight Party Line" and then listed the different parties.

If you've really researched the candidates and determined that the best qualified all fall in the same party, that's fine. I've voted that way myself. However, it makes it pretty easy for people to just vote X-party because it's X-party, and not because the candidate is the best qualified. I guess I don't have a lot of respect for those who take the easy way out, and don't thoroughly educate themselves on their candidates.

In any case, do your research, be an educated citizen, and don't forget to vote tomorrow!
