A Sad Day in the Wiggles World

Today in Australia, Greg Page announced his retirement from The Wiggles, the enormously popular children's performing group. Otherwise known as the "yellow Wiggle", Greg was the lead-singer and front-man for the group. Unfortunately, he has developed a non life-threatening heart condition that keeps him from being able to perform.

Michael has enjoyed The Wiggles since before he was a year old. It has been one of the few shows on television that we felt was appropriate for him to watch. We've been to two of their shows, once in Virginia just before Michael turned one, and again in South Carolina in late 2005. They put on an amazing performance.

Even the adults in the audience were clapping, cheering, singing, and dancing along. I remember thinking, "20 years ago, I was doing all this at a U2 concert, and now I'm having the same fun at a Wiggles show!" Definitely one of those "I'm a mom now" moments.

Greg Page has passed his yellow shirt on to Sam Moran, who has been a backup dancer and singer for The Wiggles for many years. Although I don't think anyone can fill Greg's shoes, I think that Sam will do a great job carving out his own Wiggly character.

At the show here in South Carolina last year, Sam actually filled in for Greg while Greg was in Australia taking care of an unrelated medical issue. I thought Sam did a great job. I walked out of there feeling like I had gotten my money's worth. It will be fun to see more of Sam.

Interestingly, Michael met Sam at the show in Virginia in 2004. In one part of every Wiggles concert, the Wiggly Dancers come in to the audience to collect roses for Dorothy the Dinosaur. Well, we're dog fans, so we brought a bone for Wags the Dog instead. The dancer who came to our area was Sam. And he was nice enough to let us take a picture. So hey, Michael already has a picture with the newest Wiggle!

But back to Greg. I wish him well. Even though he cannot perform any longer, I hope he will still continue to work with and influence The Wiggles. Good health to you, Greg. And thank you for helping create and being a part of such wonderful entertainment for kids.

What an adorable picture! We've featured you at Play Library as part of our celebration of unofficial Greg Page Wiggle Tribute Day. :)
