Great Business!

My last post was "jeers" but today is "cheers"!

We had a great experience this morning at one of our favorite breakfast restaurants in Greenville. Stax Omega Diner at 64 Beacon Drive in Greenville (the restaurant row right off I-85 at Pelham).

As soon as we got there, Michael started throwing one of his fits. Crying, yelling, demanding. We were doing everything we could to settle him down.

Of course I noticed some eyes looking at him. How can you NOT glance at a child who is having a tantrum in a restaurant?

I decided that if I wanted understanding for a behavior that a child with autism really can't help, I had to say something.

So I went to the hostess/cashier and the conversation went like this:

Me: "He has mild autism. We are trying to calm him down, but if it gets to bad, we will take him outside."

Hostess: "Don't worry about it! We're a diner!"

Me: "Yes I know, but we don't want to disrupt you."

Hostess: "You are not disrupting any of the staff. Don't worry about it."

Me: "Thank you. But I'm thinking of the other customers too."

Hostess: "The customers are all fine. Don't worry about it and enjoy your breakfast."

There have been so many stories in the news lately about children with autism being removed from planes and restaurants. It can make us parents a little nervous about where we can take our kids. But Stax reminded us that there are places who understand too!

If you're looking for a yummy place to eat in the Upstate with your child, definitely try Stax. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They get my vote for "autism-friendly restaurant in the Upstate"!

That's a great response, and I think it is a wonderful idea to proactively address the situation yourself rather than waiting for someone to say something to you.
