Myrtle Beach Day 1, Saturday June 28
Today was a big day! First Greg finished up his Masters program! YIPPIE! The boys and I had gone and decorated his car while he was in class. So he walked out to a big surprise.
So we hit the road, on our way to Myrtle Beach. We hadn't been to a South Carolina beach yet, and we thought this was a good one to start with. Lots of activity to keep the boys busy.
It took 5-6 hours to get here. Let me say that the traffic getting to Myrtle Beach is no better than the traffic trying to get to the Mid-Atlantic beaches we used to go to. And there's no Chesapeake Bay to cross over here! But hey, coming down for July 4th week, you've got to expect traffic!
Although we couldn't understand the 6-mile backup on I-26... which turned out to be due to an RV pulled over on the shoulder on the OTHER side of the road. Nothing obviously wrong, but the passengers were sitting up on a hill in their outdoor chairs as if they were having a picnic watching the cars go by.
When we got in to town, we were pretty amazed. From the way some people had talked about Myrtle Beach, we expected it to be a kitchy, over-populated town, pretty much like Ocean City, Maryland.
We were pleasantly surprised to find it so much LESS built-up than that! It's really beautiful here! Yes, there are the kitchy shops, the "gentleman's clubs" (which no REAL gentleman would ever go to!), and highrises. But it's all so spread out that it feels very peaceful.
Yes folks, compared to the beaches we're used to, Myrtle Beach is peaceful!
We checked in a bit late, grabbed some dinner, and took a LONG time trying to get the boys to sleep.
