2nd Night of 3k & 4k Church Class!
Last night we did our 2nd night teaching the 3k and 4k kids at church. For 6 weeks, we are teaching the liturgical seasons of the church. Last week was Advent. This week was Christmas!
Ever tried to find Christmas crafts for kids in September? Surprisingly they are not hard to find. Although still certainly outnumbered by the Halloween displays.
As always, we started out with coloring. Then we taught about Christmas, read a bible story, and sang some songs. We taught the kids that God gives us gifts at Christmas. (And kids always like the idea of gifts!) We focused on the gifts of Peace, Hope, Love, Joy, and of course Baby Jesus.
But if Christmas is Jesus' birthday, why are WE getting the gifts? Shouldn't Baby Jesus be the one getting the gifts? So we had a special box... a present for Baby Jesus. We told the kids that there was just one thing that Jesus wants for his birthday present. We opened the box and let them look inside. In the bottom of the box was a mirror.
Several of the kids started saying, "A mirror?" So we asked them, "What do you see?" One of the little girls said, "Me!" Yes! That's it! All Jesus wants for his birthday present is YOU!
We then gave each child a little heart with their name on it, and asked if they wanted to put it in the box as a birthday present for Jesus. They were so excited! I called each one by name... one by one. They couldn't wait for their turn. We gave the box to the Director of Children's Ministry to put away for Jesus at Christmas.
Finally, we did a craft of the gifts God gives to us, so the kids could take those gifts home with them. We made paper Christmas trees, and the ornaments were each of God's gifts.
The kids really seemed to have a good time! Here is a picture of our kids with their Christmas trees! And yes, that's Mom Mom in the back helping out!

De-lurking here,
Wow - that sounds like a great activity, I especially like the mirror activity. Nice and tangible for the kids.
I just want to suggest you might want to get permission from the kids parents before posting their pictures on the Internet. They may not be comfortable with it and/or your church might have some confidentiality clause that could be violated by this. Just a thought.
Again, great lessons! Are you making them up or are they from the currciulum they gave you?
