Fall Spectrum Camp @ Camp Greenville
This weekend we were part of a big "first" at Camp Greenville. It was Fall Spectrum Camp, a family camp designed especially for families that have children with autism.
Camp Greenville did such a fantastic job putting on the weekend. They are not autism specialists, but one would never know, given how well they dealt with all the kids. So many of the staff members really seemed touched by the experiences our kids were having. Greg McKee and Aleric were especially great.
One of the best parts of the weekend was watching the kids make friends. Yes, make friends. There were kids buddying up. Hanging out together. So cool!
More than anything though, we were all having this awesome weekend, kids were trying new activities and having fun, and everyone UNDERSTOOD when our kids... well... acted like kids on the spectrum. No explanations needed. Everyone got it.
So what did we get to do there? All the normal "camp" stuff! Fishing, archery, riflery, hiking, bouldering, square-dancing, and a campfire. Oh yes, and the boys visited the animal center and got to touch snakes and turtles. (Mommy kept her hands to herself, thank you!) We slept in really cool cabins (heated, with private bathrooms!), and had all our food prepared for us! (They also factored in special diets for those children following GFCF or Feingold diets.)
Camp Greenville was fantastic, and we plan to go back whenever we have the opportunity. Many thanks to everyone there for everything you did for all of us this weekend.
